The school draws its name from the late CHIEF EDWARD WANZAGI WA NYERERE, the elder brother of Mwalimu Nyerere, founding father of the Tanzanian Nation. He was the Chief of Butiama from 1942 until 1953, where he became the second Chief of Zanaki, following a mini civil war in 1952. Chief Wanzagi was a hardworking and development oriented ruler who believed in education as a liberative tool for all mankind. He initiated the construction of Butiama Primary School on volunteery basis and himself helped in the building.

At Chief Wanzagi's funeral, Mwalimu Nyerere recalled, with a deep sense of indebtness,  that it was Chief Wanzagi who persuaded their father to allow Mwalimu Nyerere to go to school. He further stated that, “If I had not gone to school Tanzania would not have been the Tanzania that we know of: I would not have been its President and certainly Tanzania would have been shaped differently.”

Hon. N.E. Mkono together with Philip J. Mangula, CCM - General Secretary, on laying the foundation stone Ceremony held at Chief Wanzagi Secondary School on 28th January 2005.

Located 3 Kilometers from Butiama village, the school was conceived by Mwalimu J.K. Nyerere, who prior to his death, had started to build it with the help of the villagers of Buturu. At the time of his death the buildings had reached lintel stage. He saw, read and approved the underlying aims, objects and scope of the overall project. This is probably the last legacy Mwalimu left for his villagers.

The classrooms and the administration block have recently been completed. This secondary school is intended to be operational soon. The teachers' houses and dormitories are next on the program. The classrooms and the administration block have been completed before the schools inauguration in 2008. As the last part of the complex, a dormitory has been constructed with the help of the Tanzania Japan Food Aid Counterpart Fund and the Catholic Church. Right now, a kitchen block is being finished, and the next phase of building will include further dormitories and well as a combined function and dining hall.
