Please read the article according the visit of Hon. Mkono to Dr. Marcano (UWC) in Venezuela

Hon. Mkono, as the heart behind this unique development project for Musoma Rural, together with the board members of the United World Colleges, are establishing a University/College in Honor of Mwalimu Nyerere, the Father and Founder of the Tanzanian Nation, under the name of "Mwalimu Nyerere UWC for Self - Reliance".

Please see the project's independent website: http://www.mnuwc.org/welcome.html

The location of the University/college in Butiama, which is the home village of Mwalimu Nyerere , is ideal to conduct agricultural and rural development studies, and would attract students from the Northern Tanzania and Southern Kenya as well as Burundi , Rwanda and Western Congo , as a safe heaven. The nearby Lake Victoria and Serengeti National Park will be of interest to the students from all over the world. The current development of an airport in the Serengeti area, which is situated near to the proposed college, will be beneficial to the college and it's students.

The main focus of the college is to offer the Tanzanian youth the best opportunity in modern rural vocational education amidst the natural rural environment and foster the on going rural activities in the modern advanced manner. Upon its completion the college will be the first of its kind in East Africa and will contribute directly towards the development of Tanzania and Africa as a whole and strive towards better education in agriculture and a wider range of other development activities.

The late Mwalimu’s idea had a vital message to bring positive changes to rural villagers. Our motto is to move Africans towards the new modern rural life through vocational based training.

The college will therefore offer education in the areas of agriculture and rural development and Students will participate in community based rural development projects, with the aim of improving the quality of life in the communities, in line with Mwalimu's ideas of self-reliance.

Due to the close connection between the United World Colleges mission and the philosophy of Mwalimu Nyerere, Hon. Mkono has liaised with UWC since August 2004. Since Hon. Mkono’s visit to the  Simón Bolivar United World College of Agriculture (SBUWC/FUNDACEA) in Venezuela in November 2004 (see news), the project has progressed quite rapidly.

The Mwalimu Nyerere UWC for Self-Reliance will be an international boarding college for a three year course for Higher Diploma, with a final year specialization option in various areas of rural industries. This second training college in the United World College (UWC) movement intends to offer a balanced programme of academic formation and practical skills in rural industries, with an emphasis on communication and business skills. Utilizing a network of cooperation with existing businesses and organisations, students will be exposed to entrepreneurs and professionals through lectures, workshops and placements.

The University/College will be located 3 kilometers from Butiama village where 570 acres of land has been secured for this purpose. The Tanzanian Government has donated some 470 acres and the Butiama village has donated the additional 100 acres.  In the North, the land stretches from the hills down towards an open field in the South where the remains of the former Butiama Artificial Insemination Center (BAIC), built in the early 1970's by the Cuban Government, is located. The site will be renovated and integrated into an Agricultural UWC modeled on the SBUWC of Venezuela. The university campus will be built adjacent to the overlooking hills.

The first building on the site will be a dormitory.

The Butiama Artificial Insemination Center (BAIC) will be renovated into an Agricultural College.
